Kara Ross

This post is for anyone who is unfamiliar with her work...

"Have you always been interested in jewelry design?

One of my fondest memories of my childhood was a safari to Africa with my parents at thirteen. To commemorate the trip, they allowed me to choose a native gemstone of my choice. When we returned home, my parents let me design my own ring with the tourmaline I chose. I still have the ring today. To know that I could create something wholly original at a young age really affected me.

What is your outlook on fashion/ personal style?
I think fashion is such a personal thing--just like appreciation for art--you may love it and the person sitting next to you may hate it. It doesn't make one right or wrong or better or worse- it's just a personal feeling. I find as I get older I am not as concerned with how people view me as long as I feel as if I'm in a good place. I do what I feel is right and comfortable for me. I like, most importantly, feeling comfortable, I hate feeling confined and fussy.

Who is your favorite designer?
I love vintage clothing. I think the word "vintage" is thrown around casually; to me good vintage is from quite a few years back! A few designers I love are: Bonnie Cashin, vintage Pucci, Schaparelli, Courreges, Halston, Zandra Rhodes, Mary McFadden, and Geoffrey Beene.

What is good taste to you?
Relaxed elegance, high quality, and good manners.

What is high quality to you?
The focus nowadays is on mass production--the positive side of this is that it brings the prices down and makes merchandise more attainable for everyone. On the other hand, it lessens the opportunity for uniqueness. Quality sometimes is affected because of mass production; manufacturers are concerned about getting the job done quickly, the cost, etc. When you're focused on limited edition or very small production runs, you can afford to spend more time, effort, and attention on the quality and uniqueness of the product. Attention to detail is key-- I love to see an artist's hand in a piece that he\she created whether its in a unique textile piece, a beautiful hand sewn bag or piece of clothing, a beautiful tabletop piece, or a painting or sculpture. This is what I strive to do in both my jewelry and handbag collections.

What do you think your pieces to communicate to those who wear them? What story do they tell?
I think that my pieces communicate modern elegance with an appreciation for the past and the world around me. Every where I go, foreign or domestic, I try and explore vintage stores, flea markets, bazaars (if they have any), and museums. Fashion to me is about incorporating all that I see and enjoy.

How do you imagine the woman that wears your collections?
A woman with an independent and unique sense of style, classic yet willing to take risks and stand out.

If you were going to be a gemstone, what would you be and why?
Rutilated quartz because no two pieces are the same; each piece is unique and surprising in its own way.

What do you think is the most beautiful fashion item or accessory you own?

My two daughters are the most beautiful things in the world to me. Fashion and accessories are constantly changing, my style is continually evolving, but they remain my two favorites."

Just a quickie

I have been meaning to post an image of this necklace for awhile now. It was one of my aforementioned purchases from George and Raf at Gifted. Worn with a pair of unsigned vintage earrings and a Curations ring.

This piece really starts to weigh on my neck after a few hours but it's worth the pain.

Lost and Found

Mishka is impossible to walk after a few blocks so sometimes he gets carted around in this cable knit bag. My mother bought this for me as a gift years ago and I never used it until now. I remember wanting this bag very badly but once it was mine it just sat in my closet. It's funny how you end up never using certain items in your wardrobe that you coveted before they came into your possession. Since I have been trying to save money as part of my New Year's resolution, I have been combing through my closet for hidden gems. Here is what I found...

This top has been apart of my wardrobe for many years. Its not the easiest piece to wear but its definitely one of my favorites.

I wish I had gotten a better image of my earrings. They are vintage Sarah Coventry and I bought them as part of a set with a matching necklace. I rarely wear them and am now starting to wonder why that is.

I also rediscovered this necklace in one of my many jewelry boxes. Its vintage Christian Dior and was purchased at the BK flea from George and Raf a few summers back.

I had mentioned using these earrings in a previous post on a cuff but wound up deciding they would make a better ring and hair clip. The hair clip is still in the works and will make its way on the blog eventually. These earrings were also purchased as part of a set and the matching necklace can be seen in this post.

For anyone out there that is as tempted as I am to spend everything you've got, take a look at what you already have. You might find that your desire for something new can be quenched with something old and forgotten.

Papi

When my family stopped for gas on our way to Thanksgiving dinner my father and I became very excited when we spotted this vintage police car in the parking lot. I had my camera on me so we snapped a few quick photos. If you can't tell from the above photograph, he likes getting dressed as much as I do.

Oh and I must point out that the car is from 1955 and use to patrol the streets of Miami beach. I kind of wish I had stumbled upon this car at the beach and wearing one of these...

It would have made for a pretty great photo op!

This lace cuff by Aurélie Bidermann sold out from Net-A-Porter instantly but the ring still remains available. My New Year's resolution is to save more money but when I see pieces like these it becomes so very hard to stick to my plan. Someone help me before I blow all of my savings!

New Years Eve and a wedding

I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I for one am a bit glad they are over! I haven't been in one place for more than a few days at a time since they began and I'm looking forward to getting back to my everyday routine. My New Years Eve this year was spent at a wedding with a few good friends in Pennsylvania. It was the perfect opportunity to get gussied up and wear my vintage Weiss necklace and Grayce Crystal Point ring. Here are a few images from my evening, better ones to come soon.

The table settings featured wedding photos of the bride and groom's parents on their big day.

My boyfriend's 1st debut to the blog! He's sporting his New Years tiara

They had four flavors of cupcakes instead of a cake.

I bought these Chloe heels back in September at FULL PRICE (they are currently significantly marked down...Ugh!). When I first saw them on the runway I knew they were destined for my feet. I purchased them the minute they came on NET-A-PORTER with a credit I had from a returned birthday gift as well as some added cash of my own. I had been waiting for the right occasion to wear them and this was it.

They had a photo booth at the wedding...

This proved to be very entertaining! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year.
