Shadowboxer

I walked into the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show on Friday and within minutes I had purchased the above "windowpane overdress". I learned my lesson after the last show and knew to act fast before someone talked me out of buying it.

This is probably one of the best clothing purchases I have made in awhile. This piece is so versatile, I can't wait to use it as a beach cover up this summer.

The entire overdress is backed with lace and can actually be worn inside out if you so desire.

Now on to the jewels. This necklace was purchased from George and Raf right before Christmas. It came from a collection of Fran Originals deadstock, or at least that is what George and Raf were told by the man they purchased it from.

The earrings have been in my collection so long that I have forgotten where they came from. I love the fact that the filigree makes them light weight. My poor ears definitely need all the help they can get! I had plugs for about five years and my ears never were the same once I decided to switch back to normal earrings.

I also must mention my vintage "Wild Pair" velvet platforms which were purchased from a vintage store in my hometown. A family friend became nostalgic when I wore them to my Father's 60th birthday party back in October. She apparently had a pair just like them in the 80's! I always find it amusing when I hear, "I can't believe those are back in fashion!"

Kara Ross

This post is for anyone who is unfamiliar with her work...

"Have you always been interested in jewelry design?

One of my fondest memories of my childhood was a safari to Africa with my parents at thirteen. To commemorate the trip, they allowed me to choose a native gemstone of my choice. When we returned home, my parents let me design my own ring with the tourmaline I chose. I still have the ring today. To know that I could create something wholly original at a young age really affected me.

What is your outlook on fashion/ personal style?
I think fashion is such a personal thing--just like appreciation for art--you may love it and the person sitting next to you may hate it. It doesn't make one right or wrong or better or worse- it's just a personal feeling. I find as I get older I am not as concerned with how people view me as long as I feel as if I'm in a good place. I do what I feel is right and comfortable for me. I like, most importantly, feeling comfortable, I hate feeling confined and fussy.

Who is your favorite designer?
I love vintage clothing. I think the word "vintage" is thrown around casually; to me good vintage is from quite a few years back! A few designers I love are: Bonnie Cashin, vintage Pucci, Schaparelli, Courreges, Halston, Zandra Rhodes, Mary McFadden, and Geoffrey Beene.

What is good taste to you?
Relaxed elegance, high quality, and good manners.

What is high quality to you?
The focus nowadays is on mass production--the positive side of this is that it brings the prices down and makes merchandise more attainable for everyone. On the other hand, it lessens the opportunity for uniqueness. Quality sometimes is affected because of mass production; manufacturers are concerned about getting the job done quickly, the cost, etc. When you're focused on limited edition or very small production runs, you can afford to spend more time, effort, and attention on the quality and uniqueness of the product. Attention to detail is key-- I love to see an artist's hand in a piece that he\she created whether its in a unique textile piece, a beautiful hand sewn bag or piece of clothing, a beautiful tabletop piece, or a painting or sculpture. This is what I strive to do in both my jewelry and handbag collections.

What do you think your pieces to communicate to those who wear them? What story do they tell?
I think that my pieces communicate modern elegance with an appreciation for the past and the world around me. Every where I go, foreign or domestic, I try and explore vintage stores, flea markets, bazaars (if they have any), and museums. Fashion to me is about incorporating all that I see and enjoy.

How do you imagine the woman that wears your collections?
A woman with an independent and unique sense of style, classic yet willing to take risks and stand out.

If you were going to be a gemstone, what would you be and why?
Rutilated quartz because no two pieces are the same; each piece is unique and surprising in its own way.

What do you think is the most beautiful fashion item or accessory you own?

My two daughters are the most beautiful things in the world to me. Fashion and accessories are constantly changing, my style is continually evolving, but they remain my two favorites."

Just a quickie

I have been meaning to post an image of this necklace for awhile now. It was one of my aforementioned purchases from George and Raf at Gifted. Worn with a pair of unsigned vintage earrings and a Curations ring.

This piece really starts to weigh on my neck after a few hours but it's worth the pain.

Lost and Found

Mishka is impossible to walk after a few blocks so sometimes he gets carted around in this cable knit bag. My mother bought this for me as a gift years ago and I never used it until now. I remember wanting this bag very badly but once it was mine it just sat in my closet. It's funny how you end up never using certain items in your wardrobe that you coveted before they came into your possession. Since I have been trying to save money as part of my New Year's resolution, I have been combing through my closet for hidden gems. Here is what I found...

This top has been apart of my wardrobe for many years. Its not the easiest piece to wear but its definitely one of my favorites.

I wish I had gotten a better image of my earrings. They are vintage Sarah Coventry and I bought them as part of a set with a matching necklace. I rarely wear them and am now starting to wonder why that is.

I also rediscovered this necklace in one of my many jewelry boxes. Its vintage Christian Dior and was purchased at the BK flea from George and Raf a few summers back.

I had mentioned using these earrings in a previous post on a cuff but wound up deciding they would make a better ring and hair clip. The hair clip is still in the works and will make its way on the blog eventually. These earrings were also purchased as part of a set and the matching necklace can be seen in this post.

For anyone out there that is as tempted as I am to spend everything you've got, take a look at what you already have. You might find that your desire for something new can be quenched with something old and forgotten.
